Fall 2026 / WINTER 2027

after school

Our after-school program is open to current ALC students and to young people from the wider community.

ALC After School is a place to make, play, explore, and spend time with other young people. Open to ages 6 to 17 years old*, ALC After School runs Monday through Thursday, with a different program each day. There’s time for engaging activities as well as the choice, independence, and supportive community at the heart of ALC. Choose what interests you and build a week that works for you!

*Check offerings for specific age minimums

ASL – Beginner

Mondays, 3:30-5:20pm
Ages: 8+
ASL instructor: will be announced soon!
ALC facilitator: Caitlin McCormick

Explore American Sign Language in a lively, hands-on class led by a qualified ASL instructor with deep knowledge of both the language and Deaf culture. Students will build practical communication skills through greetings, fingerspelling, everyday vocabulary, conversational phrases, facial expressions, and basic sentence structure, with games, partner activities, and lots of opportunities to sign with one another.

Each afternoon includes a focused group lesson from 4–5pm, with additional time before and after for informal practice, signing games, questions, and conversation. This gives students space to reinforce what they are learning, build confidence, and use ASL in a relaxed and social environment.

Dungeons & dragons

Tuesdays, 3:30-5:20pm
Ages: 12+ (or with facilitator approval)
Game Master: Arthur Velwest

Join us for exciting, collaborative gameplay adapted to your play style. Together with the other players, we’ll craft a story driven by the characters we create, and the choices we make.

Led by our own skilled Game Master with over 10 years of experience, students will learn collaborative storytelling, improvisational techniques, and social problem solving. Whether this is your first time, or your hundredth, this is an adventure you’re sure to remember for years to come!

Come be part of the story.

Photography

Wednesdays, 3:30-5:20pm
Ages: 10+ (or with facilitator approval)
Instructor: Isa Frost

Learn to see the world through a photographer’s eye. After time to snack and settle in, students explore fundamentals like light, shadow, composition, perspective, reflections, portraiture, and creative techniques, then head into Central Park for a guided photo walk to put them into practice.

All ages and experience levels are welcome, and any camera—from a smartphone to a professional camera—will work. The class is led by an internationally exhibited photographer whose work has been shown in New York and around the world.

SELF-DIRECTED

Thursdays, 3:30-5:20pm
Ages: 6+
Facilitator: Arthur Velwest

Get to know what it means to be “self-directed” on Thursday afternoons at ALC. Enjoy time, space, tools, and support to follow what interests you. Build something, make art or music, play a game, work on a project, find collaborators, or start something entirely new.

Facilitators are there to offer ideas, resources, and help when it’s useful, while young people decide how they want to spend their time and what they want to explore in our space.
