21st Century Education
In a world changing quickly and flooded with information of wildly uneven value, amassing facts is worth much less than it used to be. ALC students practice deciding what deserves their attention, taking initiative to solve problems that matter to them, building confidence in their ability to learn new things, and participating in creating the culture around them.
At ALC, we create the conditions for students to grow deliberately, both as learners and as architects of their lives. That means knowing when to provide scaffolding, and when to step back.
We recognize that every child is unique, so we provide many ways to engage, empowering students to learn, explore, and show what they know in ways that work for them.
Purpose
Most people wait until after school to explore their interests. Many wait until adulthood to figure out their purpose. ALC kids start now. Given space and support for their curiosity, students discover passions, develop skills, and begin figuring out how they want to participate in and contribute to the world.
Agency
The modern world needs people who can do more than follow directions: people who recognize a problem and start taking steps to address it. Students practice setting goals, managing their time, responding to challenges, and reflecting on what works—building executive function, resilience, and metacognition along the way.
Digital literacy
With so much information at our fingertips, students need to know how to find what’s useful, evaluate what’s trustworthy, and recognize manipulation and noise. At ALC, digital literacy also means learning to use technology with intention—as a tool for creating, communicating, researching, organizing, and participating in the world.
Collaboration
Collaboration asks people to communicate clearly, navigate differences, recognize one another’s strengths, and share responsibility. As stewards and key stakeholders, students at ALC practice doing exactly that—leading without needing to be the only leader in the room.
Culture creation
Culture can seem like something we simply inherit—the norms, expectations, and habits of the communities we enter. At ALC, we recognize culture as something continually shaped through our choices and relationships. We co-create that culture by surfacing assumptions, making shared agreements, and deciding together how we want to live and learn.
Sharing
Sharing at ALC takes many forms. Students might present a finished project, add to a portfolio, teach someone a skill, talk through an idea, ask a question, or invite others into something they care about. In each case, sharing gives learning a life beyond the individual—deepening understanding, building connection, and opening new possibilities for everyone involved.
