ALC Cottonwood

an agile learning community for 5 & 6 year olds

We are developing an early learning community for 5 and 6 year olds rooted in curiosity, discovery and play. Recognizing that curiosity is innate, learning is natural and play is often the catalyst for deep investigation, the kids at ALC Cottonwood have space to explore, tinker, dabble and invent.
ALC Cottonwood kids will spend most of their time off-site in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Each day we will travel between our schoolroom and the parks, streets, libraries, homes, and businesses of the community. We acknowledge the city as  our greatest resource and take full advantage of the civic and environmental landscape.

On any given morning you will find us in the green space of McGolrick Park building forts, tending to the worms and examining nature with a  magnifying glass. On an afternoon you may find the kids shopping for ingredients for their next cooking project or visiting with the librarian about the right book to answer their questions.

At ALC Cottonwood we create the space for kids to be kids. We build a foundation for young learners to transition into the self-directed environment of ALC-NYC.

The Agile Cycle of Learning

What do you want to accomplish today?

In an Agile Learning Center, we discern and articulate what we want to do, individually and as a group.

What are you going to do about it?

Agile Learners spend their days exploring and inventing – once we know what we want, we create it.

What did you learn from your choices?

Looking back, we develop awareness of what worked and what didn’t, so we can move forward more powerfully.

How can you share it with the world?

We document our work to record, exhibit, and share our experience with others.
